Overview

The Largest Night of the Year at Pashupatinath

Maha Shivaratri falls on the fourteenth night of the waning moon in the month of Phalguna, which lands in February or March; published calendars put it on Saturday 6 March in 2027. It is the night of Shiva, and at Pashupatinath in Kathmandu it is the largest gathering of the year: the temple stays open through the night, sadhus travel from across India to camp on the grounds, and thousands of pilgrims come to the Bagmati.

Because the festival follows the lunar calendar, the tour is built around it. The first five days take you to Muktinath in Mustang, sacred to Hindus and Buddhists alike, and back down the Kali Gandaki by way of Galeshwor Mahadev. The sixth day is Shivaratri at Pashupatinath.

Only Hindus are admitted to the main courtyard at Pashupatinath, on the festival night as on every other. Visitors of other faiths watch from the eastern bank of the Bagmati, which is open to all and is where most of the night’s life is.

Dates are confirmed each year from the lunar calendar.
