The Spiritual Significance

What is Barah Kshetra?

Barah Kshetra is a Hindu pilgrimage site in Sunsari district, Koshi Province, eastern Nepal, at the confluence of the Koshi and Koka rivers north-west of Dharan. It is dedicated to Lord Baraha, the Varaha or boar incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The Nepal Tourism Board lists Barah Kshetra among Nepal’s important pilgrimage destinations, and it is one of the Char Dham of Nepal, with Pashupatinath, Muktinath and Ruru Kshetra at Ridi.

Barah Kshetra is among the oldest sacred sites in Nepal. It is mentioned in the Brahma, Varaha and Skanda Puranas and in the Mahabharata, and statues found there are more than 1,500 years old. The main temple was rebuilt by Juddha Shumsher after the great earthquake of 1934. The complex holds nine temples, among them those of Laxmi, Guru Varaha, Surya Varaha, Koka Varaha and Nageshwar, with dharmashalas for pilgrims.

Pilgrims come for darshan of Lord Baraha, for puja and prayer, and to bathe at the confluence of the two rivers. The busiest days are Kartik Purnima, which draws pilgrims from India and falls on 24 November 2026, and Makar Sankranti in mid-January, which draws pilgrims from the hills of Nepal.

“Kartik Purnima and Makar Sankranti fill the Koshi and Koka confluence with pilgrims.”

Who the Barah Kshetra Vishnu Yatra Is For

The Barah Kshetra Vishnu Yatra is a private pilgrimage for Vaishnav and Vishnu devotees, families, temple groups, spiritual organisations, Hindu pilgrimage groups, senior pilgrim groups, Krishna and Vaishnav communities, private religious groups and international devotees. It is an easy journey: two short flights, road transfers on the plains, and one full day at the temple and the river. Barah Kshetra and Itahari are low-lying, so altitude is not a concern.

The land price is USD 350 per person for 2 to 11 pilgrims and USD 270 for 12 or more, with twin sharing in a 3-star hotel. The flights add USD 120 per person each way, so USD 240 for the return, and the private vehicle adds USD 300 for each 4 people, so a group of 10 needs 3 vehicles. The final price depends on the airfare, the hotel category, the vehicle and the size of the group, and is confirmed in your quotation. A single pilgrim is quoted on request.

The flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar takes about 35 minutes, and Buddha Air lists more than eight a day. If a flight is cancelled, Sama Yatra arranges a road alternative where practical and tells the group about any extra cost before it is confirmed. The best months are October to May. About 80% of Nepal’s rain falls in the June to September monsoon, so the yatra avoids periods of heavy monsoon disruption. Kartik Purnima and Makar Sankranti are the most crowded days at the temple.

Indian citizens need no visa for Nepal. Other SAARC citizens receive a free tourist visa of up to 30 days on a first visit in a visa year, and everyone else pays USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days or USD 125 for 90 days, as of September 2026. Your guide will tell you the rules on entering each shrine. A 30% deposit confirms the booking and the balance is due before arrival. Bookings cannot be cancelled, but the journey can be postponed for up to two years at the same cost. Children are quoted at a reduced rate by age, and Indian pilgrims can be quoted in rupees.

For organised groups Sama Yatra can arrange a Lord Baraha puja, abhishek, sankalpa, priest assistance, flower and devotional offerings, group prayer, bhajan and kirtan, satsang and a Hindi-speaking guide. These depend on temple and priest availability and are quoted separately.
