Both routes reach the temple
Muktinath Temple, at 3,710 metres in the Mustang district of Nepal, can be reached by road or by helicopter. Sama Yatra runs three Muktinath journeys from Kathmandu: the Muktinath Yatra by Road, the Muktinath Helicopter Tour, and the Luxury Muktinath Tour, which flies to Pokhara and takes a chartered helicopter to Muktinath. None of the three involves trekking.
Whichever way you go, the darshan is the same: the main temple, the 108 water spouts, and the Jwala Mai shrine, where a natural flame burns over water.
By road: eight days and the lowest price
The Muktinath Yatra by Road takes 8 days and 7 nights. It drives from Kathmandu to Pokhara on day 3, and on day 4 goes up the Kali Gandaki valley by private jeep or tourist bus, past Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri, for darshan and the evening aarti at Muktinath. You sleep near the temple that night, then come back by way of Naudanda, a sunrise at Sarangkot and the sights of Pokhara.
It costs USD 800 per person for 2 to 5 travellers, USD 600 for 6 to 11 and USD 500 for 12 or more. The drive up to Muktinath is long and rough in places. Families and senior pilgrims who can manage long drives usually choose this route.
By helicopter: six days and one morning at the temple
The Muktinath Helicopter Tour takes 6 days and 5 nights. You fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara on day 3, a 25-minute flight, and early on day 4 a helicopter flies up the Kali Gandaki to Muktinath and back to Pokhara the same morning. The helicopter lands close to the temple, so you walk very little at altitude.
It costs USD 3,000 per person for 2 to 5 travellers, USD 2,500 for 6 to 11 and USD 2,200 for 12 or more. The price falls as the group grows because the helicopter is chartered and its cost is shared. It suits pilgrims with limited time and travellers who cannot manage long mountain drives. Mountain weather can delay a flight, and costs arising from weather delays are not included.
In comfort: a helicopter to Muktinath and luxury hotels
The Luxury Muktinath Tour takes 8 days. It flies from Kathmandu to Pokhara, takes a chartered helicopter to Muktinath, and sleeps in a mountain lodge in Jomsom at 2,743 metres, nearly a thousand metres below the temple. It comes home by way of Nagarkot and Bhaktapur, stays in luxury hotels throughout, and costs USD 4,200 per person for 5 to 8 travellers, falling to USD 3,600 for a group of 17 or more.
Altitude: where you sleep matters
Some visitors feel the altitude at Muktinath as a headache or breathlessness. On the road journey you sleep near the temple at 3,710 metres. On the luxury tour you sleep lower, in Jomsom. On the helicopter tour you are back in Pokhara, at 822 metres, the same morning. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should speak to their doctor before any of the three.
Which one to book
Choose the road if cost matters most and long drives do not trouble you. Choose the helicopter if time is short, or if long mountain roads are hard for you. Choose the luxury tour if you want the helicopter with luxury hotels, a night at a lower altitude and Nagarkot and Bhaktapur on the way home.
All three run all year, and the most reliable months are March to June and September to November.
